Guidelines for law enforcement requests.
Nuvira is built to hold as little as possible, and to disclose even less without a person reviewing the request. This page explains what we can and cannot provide, what legal process we require, and how to submit a request. It is not legal advice — consult your agency's counsel about what process is appropriate in your jurisdiction.
A few things are true no matter what.
- No automated disclosure. Every request is read, checked, and decided on by a person — nothing here releases data on its own.
- No message content, ever. Nuvira messages are end-to-end encrypted with SkyCipher™ and are not retained on our servers in a readable form. There is nothing to hand over even with valid process.
- Valid legal process required. A request must be backed by the process appropriate to what's being asked for — see below.
- Manual verification, always. We confirm every submission is genuinely from the agency it claims to be from before anything moves forward.
What we can — and can't — provide.
Even with valid legal process, some things simply don't exist on our end to hand over.
May be available, with valid process
- Whether an account tied to a given identifier exists, and its approximate creation date
- The email address on file for an account, if any
- Basic device/app metadata Nuvira actually logs (e.g. app version, platform)
- Content or details a user submitted directly to us through an in-app report
Not available, under any process
- Message content — direct or group — encrypted or otherwise
- Real-time interception or live monitoring of any account
- Contact lists, chat history, or media, since none of it is stored server-side in readable form
- Data on other users beyond what a specific, valid order compels
How to submit a request.
One form, submitted once you've gathered everything below. Nothing is sent until you finish it.
Case number
Your agency's case or reference number. We use it as the identifier for everything that follows, including status checks.
Point of contact
A work email at your agency and your department or agency name, so we know who's asking and can reach you.
Legal process document
Upload the subpoena, warrant, or court order backing the request, as a PDF.
Set a status PIN
A PIN only you will know, used later to check on your case — paired with your case number, nothing else.
Submitter details
Your last name and badge number, kept minimal on purpose.
Verification
If your email domain is one we've already verified, your case moves straight to review. If not, you'll be asked for a public, official non-emergency line for your department — not a personal or direct number — so we can confirm the request is genuinely from your agency before it's reviewed.
